Unity secures $5.5 million investment
Middleware firm closes new venture capital deal for Unity 3D engine
Unity Technologies has reportedly won a $5.5 million round of new investment, following continued success for its Unity 3D middleware engine for the iPhone, PC, Mac and Wii.
Although the company itself has made no official announcement of the deal, tech site VatorNews suggests that the lead - or possibly exclusive - investor is venture capital firm Sequoia Capital.
Version 2.5 of the Unity engine was recently launched, with the company's growth predominately due to the technology's use on the iPhone. More than 250 iPhone games already use the engine, including five titles out the top 100 sellers on the format.
Unity's focus has increasingly been on home formats in recent months, with the engine supporting both Mac and Windows as well as a variety of Web browsers. Last week the company announced that the Unity engine would be used in high profile online title Lego Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2.
The company's annual Unite Conference is set to take place October 27-30 in San Francisco, with Electronic Arts' chief creative director Richard Hilleman set to give a keynote speech.
