Trion partners with Petroglyph for online RTS
Empire at War developer to use Trion tech for MMORTS
Trion World Network has announced a partnership with game developer Petroglyph to create and publish a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game. The title will be the first third-party game developed using Trion's proprietary technology.
"Trion is thrilled to partner with such decorated and extremely talented game vets as the Petroglyph team," said Trion CEO Lars Buttler. "We are very excited about bringing the world's first truly high-end MMORTS to market and we can't wait to share with gamers the innovative and fun game design Petroglyph is creating on the Trion platform."
Las Vegas-based Petroglyph is an experienced developer of real-time strategy games, responsible for Star Wars: Empire at War and Universe at War: Earth Assault. The team is comprised of many former employees of Westwood Studios, who worked on games in the Command & Conquer series prior to the studio's acquisition by Electronic Arts in 1998.
"Petroglyph is extremely excited to be working with a visionary publisher like Trion World Network", said Petroglyph president and co-founder Michael Legg. "Combining Trion's platform and industry expertise with our GLYPH game technology and our development pedigree will allow us to unleash a groundbreaking MMORTS gaming experience to the world."
Trion World Network was founded in 2006 as a developer and publisher of server-based games and platforms. Since that time it has raised over USD 100 million in venture capitalist funding to develop the "Trion Platform," which Petroglyph will be utilising for the title announced today.
In 2007, Trion announced a partnership with Hewlett Packard to build a multi-platform gaming service. Trion has also announced that it will develop and publish a fantasy themed MMORPG for PCs and consoles and a subsequent MMO developed in tandem with an unannounced television series on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Last week, Trion president and CCO Jon Van Caneghem left the company under what are rumored to be negative circumstances.
