Splash Damage plans dedicated servers for Brink
But Rebellion uncommitted on Aliens vs Predator, as hot topic rages
Forthcoming first person shooter Brink will feature dedicated servers for the PC version, claimed developer Splash Damage, as the fan revolt over Modern Warfare 2 continues.
The decision not to offer dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has resulted in intense criticism from the fan community, including a 165,000 signature online petition. This has thrust the subject into the limelight, with developer DICE recently confirming that it would continue to use dedicated servers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo in Leeds yesterday, Splash Damage CEO Paul Wedgwood confirmed that the PC version of forthcoming title Brink would also retain dedicated servers - as has previously been the industry norm.
At the same time fellow British developer Rebellion has implied that the new PC version of Aliens vs Predator may not feature dedicated servers.
After initially evading the question entirely senior producer David Brickley told website C&VG: "Well the one thing we can say is obviously running an operation like that is monumentally expensive. For the period the original was up, people who played that game got an incredible experience."
"You know what the Internet's like. We're obviously used to getting things for free over the years. I guess on our side the thing we're focusing on is whatever your set-up at home, you get the best possible experience from it. We're just trying to use our time and resources wisely," he added.
Asked a third time to give a definite answer, Brickley responded: "As I said the game is still quite a way from release so I guess there are other things to be determined during that time."
