Scottish Govt opens Commonwealth Games competition
Student prize winners take home £2014 and see their game made by Dundee's 4J
Scots students have been invited to enter a game design competition in honour of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The winner will be judged to have embodied the games' themes of humanity, destiny and equality.
Both the winner and the runner up will receive £2014 in prize money, with the winner's game concept being made a reality by Dundee developer 4J. The winning game will then be made available for free on the official Glasgow 2014 website.
"Scotland has a exceptional computer games industry and we want it to play an important part of Glasgow 2014, starting with this competition to get students involved in creating a game to go on our website," said the 2014 chief executive John Scott.
"I can't wait to see the designs that are submitted and to see the winning concept go from being on paper to a reality. Glasgow 2014 is all about getting people involved from across Scotland and inspiring people to strive to do their best. I hope that this competition achieves that."
Part of the judging panel will be Dave Jones, co-creator of GTA and Lemmings.
"I am very much looking forward to judging the Scottish Government's digital games contest which undoubtedly will see ideas to match the exciting occasion of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games," Jones told press.
Entrants must be students currently studying either full time or part time in Scottish higher Education Institutions. The competition is open to students studying any course and is not restricted to those undertaking a computer science, game or art course. The competition is open for ten weeks until midnight on 4 April 2011.
