Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter raises over $650,000
Replay Games has crossed over its goal for Larry's return with room to spare
Replay Games has raised $655,182 in a Kickstarter drive to bring back Leisure Suit Larry in a remake of the first game in the series. The company's funding goal was $500,000 and final total came from more than 14,081 backers. With the funding raised, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded will be coming to PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.
"I'm really stoked," Replay founder Paul Trowe told VentureBeat in an interview. "Especially after one of the VCs turned us down because they didn't want to be associated with Leisure Suit Larry. It's such an honor. When you think you've seen every business model, and heard every story about publisher battles and ego fights, I'm floored, thankful, and grateful."
Trowe, who was once the first beta tester at Leisure Suit Larry publisher Sierra Online, was instrumental in starting the project. He acquired the rights to Leisure Suit Larry in 2010, and then got the game's original creator, Al Lowe, to return for the remake. The title will be distributed by Replay Games, but developed by Adventure Mob, a game studio based in Tel Aviv. Adventure Mob is developing the game in Unity 3D.
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded is currently expected to release in January 2013, a delay from its original planned release in October of 2012. Trowe said the extra time will be used to add more content to the game.
"At the demand of fans, we have to add a new girlfriend, two extra rooms and all new dialogue," Trowe said. "It's going to be a lot more than a remake."
