Hideo Kojima to pick up Industry Icon prize at The Game Awards 2016

Metal Gear creator was blocked from award win last year by former publisher Konami

The organisers behind The Game Awards has announced Hideo Kojima will be attending this year's ceremony to pick up the gong for Industry Icon.

The news is significant as the veteran developer was blocked from collecting an award at last year's ceremony by Konami. Metal Gear Solid V won Best Action/Adventure Game in 2015, but an ongoing dispute between Kojima and the series' publisher Konami prevented him from attending, with the game's star Kiefer Sutherland having to step in.

The Game Awards found Geoff Keighley openly called out Konami for barring Kojima from picking up his honour, and said in a press release for this year's event that his "first priority was to make sure we honour him properly in front of his peers and fans".

He also announced the news via Twitter:

Just two weeks after The Game Awards 2015, the Metal Gear creator re-emerged at the head of a revamped Kojima Productions and announced a partnership with PlayStation. The first fruits of that partnership, the bizarre Death Stranding, was announced at E3 earlier this year.

The Game Awards 2016 takes place on December 1st. Yesterday, Geoff Keighley said he and his team are planning deeper, more transparent game announcements and reveals after claims the No Man's Sky footage at the 2014 awards misrepresented the final game.
