Epic Games acquires shopping mall for new headquarters

The company will transform the 980,000-square-foot and 87-acre Cary Towne Center into its new campus by 2024

Epic Games announced the acquisition of Cary Towne Center, a shopping mall located in Cary, North Carolina, that it will convert into its new headquarters.

In a blog post announcing the move, Epic said the new campus will open by 2024. The acquisition includes both the buildings and "recreational spaces," for a total surface area of 980,000 square feet and 87 acres.

Development of the headquarters will begin this year, with Epic to remain located at Crossroads Boulevard in the same city in the meantime, where it's been headquartered for the past 20 years.

Cary Towne Center belonged to Turnbridge Equities and Denali Properties, which acquired it in January 2019 "in a distressed sale following the loss of three of its five anchor tenants," the announcement said. The terms of the acquisition by Epic, which was represented by Stephen Porterfield of Capital Associates, were not disclosed.

The company added that it's already working with the Town of Cary to explore ways the new campus "might be used by the community."
