Canada passes UK as third largest development centre

Ontario continues to offer strong financial incentives to lure talent to the country

Canada has confirmed that it has passed the UK to become the third largest country for videogames development globally.

The news comes on the same day that Realtime Worlds enters administration - although the two aren't linked.

A statement from the Province of Ontario cites a "combination of a deep talent pool, strong economy and targeted incentives" as the reasons behind the country's rise in the rankings - although an impending drop for the UK has been predicted for some time.

Among the incentives on offer this week at GDC Europe and Gamescom in Cologne are an IP fund worth 30 per cent of early stage costs, a tax credit for 35-40 per cent of production costs, a 20 per cent credit on special effects labour costs and up to $150,00 Canadian in project production funding.

In addition the Province is also underlining the facilities available, highlighted with a $107 million digital media centre in Kitchener.
