Adobe acquires Mixamo
3D animation company's tech will be integrated into Photoshop CC
Adobe has acquired Mixamo, the 3D character animation pipeline that will be well known to users of the Unity engine.
The value of the deal was not disclosed, but Adobe has outlined its plan to integrate Mixamo's technology into Photoshop CC, which has relatively limited capabilities when it comes to 3D content.
"With this acquisition, we are excited to offer greater value to customers while introducing a new way of working to our design community that is looking to push the limits with 3D tools," Adobe said in a statement.
Mixamo, which is based in San Francisco, described Adobe as a company with, "similar goals," to its own. Over the next few months, while the integration takes place, new purchases of Mixamo products, including renewals, will be suspended. Existing customers will be able to use their products without interruption, and any plans that expire before the end of the year have been extended to December 31, 2015 at no additional cost.
However, this does leave a question about Mixamo's integration into Unity, which started all the way back in 2011. At present, Mixamo still has a workflow tutorial regarding its use with Unity on its website, but we have made enquiries about how this will be affected by the Adobe acquisition.
