Activision takes back the rights to King's Quest
Telltale Games confirms that rights revert to Activision
Telltale Games has confirmed that the rights to the classic King's Quest series have reverted back to Activision, scuttling previous plans for a new entry in the series. The news comes from DigitalTrends's conversation with Replay Games president Paul Trowe, who was planning on working with King's Quest creator Roberta Williams on a possible title. Trowe was behind the successful KickStarter campaign for the Leisure Suit Larry HD remake.
"Activision's probably not going to give us the King's Quest rights," Trowe told DigitalTrends. "[Telltale] had it, and we were going to license it from them to make the remakes. Then I talked to the guys at Activision and they were like, 'No, we're pulling it because we're going to do it ourselves.'"
Back in 2011, Telltale Games said they were planning to do something with the brand, but nothing came of the announcement due to the studio's work on The Walking Dead and Fables.
"While we deeply love King's Quest here at Telltale, we can confirm that we are no longer working on the franchise. There was a time last year that we investigated partnering with third party developers to produce the game as a partnership but decided against outsourcing. We are not privy to what plans Activision has for the franchise, if any," said Telltale Games senior vice president of publishing Steve Allison.
