Writers' Guild Awards 2008
Eurogamer to judge Videogame Script category for next month's gongs.
The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain is delighted to announce that Eurogamer.net Europe’s largest gaming website, will be judging the Best Videogame Script for the Writers’ Guild Awards 2008, to be held at BAFTA on Sunday 23rd November:
Deputy General Secretary of the WGGB, Anne Hogben, said: This is a very exciting time in the evolution of the video games industry. The role of the writer is finally becoming widely recognised and valued in the overall gaming experience and the reason the Guild recently established an award for games writers was to acknowledge the particular skill of writing for video games. We are very happy that a well-established company like Eurogamer has come on board and lent us the benefit of their considerable expertise in helping us to select the highest quality writing.”
The recently released shortlist of nominees for the Guild’s newest award category, now in its second year, was also judged by the gaming aficionados.
Best Videogame Script Shortlist
• Rhianna Pratchett - Overlord
• Tom Jubert - Penumbra Black Plague
• Rhianna Pratchett, Tameem Antoniades and Andy Serkis - Heavenly Sword
• Steve Ince - So Blonde
Editorial Director, Eurogamer.net, Kristan Reed commented: "A satisfying, engaging narrative is often an essential part of the gaming experience, whether it comes from ambient chatter, or dramatic cut-scenes. But with such a diverse range of games and styles to write for, the medium has become fertile ground for a different type of story teller who understands the many unique challenges of crafting a narrative around often non-linear events.”
“In the UK we're fortunate to have a growing pool of game writing talent, and it has been our pleasure at Eurogamer to become involved with the Writers Guild and to judge this year's entrants. The standard has been excellent, from blockbusters to indie efforts and we wish the nominated writers the best of luck."
100 tickets to the ceremony, which will be hosted by Jeremy Hardy, are now on sale at a cost of £30 to Writers’ Guild members and £50 to non-members. For further information about tickets, please contact the Writers’ Guild office on 020 7833 0777 or email Lauren@writersguild.org.uk.
