World of Warcraft gets a price hike in the UK
New expansion will see subs rise by around £1 a month - [UPDATE] Price change is UK only
Update: A Blizzard representative has confirmed that the price increase is limited to the UK, and it has no plans to implement a price change in any other region.
Original Story: The UK release of World of Warcraft's Warlords of Draenor expansion pack will bring with it an increase in the game's subscription price.
According to a post on the Battle.net forums, when Warlords of Draenor hits the UK on November 13 this year, WoW's pricing will increase by around £1 per month: 30 days will rise from £8.99 to £9.99, 90 days from £25.17 to £28.17, and 180 days from £46.14 to £52.14.
Any player with a recurring subscription when the prices change will be entitled to play at the same rate for two years, as long as they don't cancel or alter their subscription.
"We regularly look at our pricing around the world and from time to time we make changes in light of local and regional market conditions," the Battle.net post read.
Those conditions may include the game's declining player-base, which was down to 6.8 million at the end of June after losing 800,000 players in just three months. Obviously, 6.8 million is still an enviable figure in the context of subscription MMOs, and Activision expressed its confidence that the numbers will rise when Warlords of Draenor launches.
At present it isn't clear whether the price changes will apply outside of the UK. We have reached out to Blizzard for more information.
