WipEout coming to PlayStation Portable?

PlayStation-era classic WipEout may be making its next appearance on the PlayStation Portable, if a telling slip of the tongue from a Sony representative this week is to be believed.

PlayStation-era classic WipEout may be making its next appearance on the PlayStation Portable, if a telling slip of the tongue from a Sony representative this week is to be believed.

UK website TotalVideoGames.com asked the company about the possibility of a new title in the series for the PS2 following the disappointing Wipeout Fusion - and were informed that the company "hasn't announced any SCEE published games for PSP yet."

Although Wipeout Fusion was a marked underachiever both critically and commercially, the series remains one of the classic games associated with the PlayStation name, and it was one of the titles - along with Tekken - which originally propelled the console to the forefront of youth culture in the UK.

It seems both likely and fitting that Sony's entry into the handheld market would be accompanied by a WipEout game - and given the specification of the portable system, it's probable that this would be the most technically accomplished game in the series.

Of course, this remains in the realms of pure speculation, as Sony has yet to confirm any of the titles in development for PSP. The first title announcements for the system are likely to come at E3, when the device gets its official unveiling.
