Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain has released figures revealing that nearly 1 million Nintendo Wii consoles have been sold in the territory so far.

According to Enterbrain's survey, which covered 3500 stores, 989,118 Wii units were sold between console launch on December 2 and January 7.

The PlayStation 3 hit Japanese shops on November 11, and severe stock shortages followed. Enterbrain puts the figure for PS3 sales since launch at 466,716 units.

The publisher did not release stats for Xbox 360, which has so far struggled to secure a firm foothold in Japan. However, Media Create figures released last month suggested that sales of Microsoft's console did receive a boost following the release of platform exclusive Blue Dragon.
