Want To Represent the UK in this year’s Electronic Sports World Cup? Game On.

Fancy your chances of representing the UK in the video gaming equivalent of the Olympics or World Cup? Well, the time for practice is over as amateurs and professionals can now enter for the regional finals of the fourth Electronic Sports World Cup. They can do so by registering online at www.eswc.co.uk

E-sports is an increasingly-popular cultural phenomenon, with the best competitors having a unique chance to go forward and represent the UK at the event's Grand Finals in Paris at the end of June. As testament to its ever-growing popularity, the event organisers are offering a prize fund of $400,000 - to be shared between the ultimate global champions of the six PC and Playstation game disciplines. The games featured are: Counter-Strike 1.6 for PC by Valve Software; Quake 4 - for PC by ID Software / Activision; Warcraft III TFT for PC by Blizzard / VU Games; Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 by Polyphonie Digital / SCEE; Pro Evolution Soccer 5 for PC by Konami; and Trackmania Nations ESWC for PC by Nadeo.

Last year in the UK, the competition attracted over 200 pre-dominantly professional gamers in the UK heats, leading to the national finals staged in Oxford. The 2006 UK finals will be produced and stage-managed by official ESWC UK organisers Game Frontier. Details of the regional event roll-out and national finals location and dates will be announced within the next month.

The UK defending champion of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is 20-year-old Asian Hawk, who has qualified to represent the UK for the last two years. The Manchester-based player believes that the phenomenon of e-sport is rapidly moving from underground cult to popular mainstream status: "With the fantastic prize money on offer in Paris this year, I can see that defending my UK crown in Pro Evolution Soccer will be an increasingly competitive task. But if you ask me whether I'm up for it? Challenge most definitely accepted".
