Videogames close the gap on US home video market
A new report reveals that growing videogame sales are catching up to those of home video sales in North America
The Entertainment Merchant Association has released its annual report which shows the growing games industry catching up in sales to the home video market in the US.
The US home video market generated USD 24 billion, this includes USD 15.9 billion in sales and USD 8.2 billion in rentals for 2007. Meanwhile the region's videogame market grew to be worth USD 15.64 billion, a figure which doesn't include revenue generated through rentals like the home video market.
In the video game market, game software sales took in a total of USD 8.6 billion and hardware sales accounted for 7.04 billion. The total of this, USD 15.64 billion, compares favourably to the USD 15.9 billion earned by the home video market when rental revenue is discounted.
The report also revealed that 67 per cent of heads of households in North America now play videogames.
