Video: Ubisoft's E3 Wii U roundtable discussion
Yves Guillemot and Satoru Iwata on how the two companies will work together
When Nintendo went public with its Wii U announcement at E3, publishers were not slow to pledge support for the new platform, as you might expect, but it was the nature of the games being forwarded which was something of a surprise.
Activsion and EA were eager to promise complete commitment to the console across their catalogues - undoubtedly somewhat fuelled by their ongoing contest for the title of world's number one publisher - but also indicative of Nintendo's behind the scenes work to ensure that the new machine will carry 'core' titles - titles which have been the almost exclusive domain of Sony and Microsoft's consoles this generation.
Ubisoft's support was perhaps more of a known quantity. The publisher has seen great success on Nintendo's Wii and DS with its range of family friendly titles, such as the Rabbids games and the Imagine series. Nonetheless, it was not those games which Ubisoft pushed hardest in their messages of support for Nintendo.
Alongside a new fitness title and a brand new Rabbids game, Ubisoft showed Ghost Recon Online and Assassin's Creed, as well as new first-person shooter IP Killer Freaks From Outer Space. Whether the early promise of these games will translate to long-term support for core games from Nintendo and its third-party affiliates remains to be seen, but the evidence is already in favour of Nintendo's promise of "deeper and wider" proving to be justified.
