Seven months after its launch at the Art History of Games symposium in Atlanta on 4 February 2010, Tale of Tales release a free version of Vanitas simultaneously with a minor update of the original for iPhone and iPod touch. The web-version requires the Unity plug-in and makes up for the lack of tilt and multitouch on PCs by running the app much smoother.
Vanitas is a wooden box with small objects in it. Every time you open the box, you see three new objects. The different combinations form compositions that remind of "Vanitas" -or "Memento Mori"- paintings from the renaissance and baroque periods. Updated for the present day. And running on what is probably one of the most striking vanity symbols of our age.

The subtle cello music in Vanitas was created by Zoë Keating, who recently released a new album, entitled "Into the trees". The Vanitas player with an attentive ear will recognize several phrases in her beautiful new compositions.

Vanitas was originally commissioned for the Art History of Games symposium and exhibition by the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Georgia Institute of Technology Program in Digital Media. Next to Jason Rohrer's "Sleep is Death" and Eric Zimmerman & Nathalie Pozzi's "Sixteen Tons".
