Sony Computer Entertainment has moved to correct erroneous reports from earlier this week which stated that UMD movies have just topped 100,000 sales in total - revealing that in fact, two individual titles have broken this barrier.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony representative said that the reports citing the 100,000 figures had misconstrued comments made by the company regarding sales, which were intended to mean that some titles had topped 100,000 sales, rather than indicating sales across the entire range.
"At least two UMD movie titles have sold over 100,000 units in the USA," the spokesperson told us, going on to reveal that the two titles in question are Resident Evil Apocalypse and House of Flying Daggers.
Other titles in the range have also sold well, he claimed, which would put the overall sales figures for the UMD movie format in North America at well over 200,000 - and possibly significantly higher than that, with sales in the half-million range certainly not implausible.
Those figures also don't count the million copies of Spider-Man 2 on UMD which were distributed by SCEA with the PlayStation Portable at its launch in North America.
Earlier this week, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves told the ELSPA International Games Summit in London that when the PSP eventually arrives in Europe at the start of September, it may launch with as many as 25 UMD movie titles.
