UMD film sales top 100,000 - Sony
Sales of film content on Universal Media Disc have topped 100,000, Sony reportedly said this week, and that figure does not include bundled copies of Spider-Man 2.
Sales of films distributed on Universal Media Disc (UMD), Sony's proprietary disc format for PlayStation Portable, have topped 100,000 according to the platform holder.
Quoting a Sony executive for Benelux, Reuters said the figure did not include copies of the film Spider-Man 2, which was bundled with a great many American PSP units.
UMD films cost between $19.95 and $29.95 in the USA.
Sony's film canon is broadening all the time, the executive said, with releases aimed at demographics outside the traditional 18-25 year-old male gamer demographic expected soon - including releases targeted at women, and cartoons.
New deals are being announced regularly - just this week we've seen Anchor Bay Entertainment pledge six releases, including horror and Manga titles, with the promise of more to come.
Speaking at the ELSPA International Games Summit yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves said "maybe 25 movies" would be available at the European PSP launch this September 1st.
