TIGA cheered by today's GCSE results.
Commenting on today’s GCSE examination results, TIGA said that the rise in the proportion of young people achieving A*- C grades at GCSE mathematics, together with the increase in entries for physics, was encouraging.
However, the challenge to improve standards remains: over two-fifths of GCSE students failed to get a good pass (A* - C grades) at GCSE mathematics in 2010.
Commenting on today’s GCSE exam results, Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said:
“The increase in the overall A* - C rate in mathematics from 57.2 per cent in 2009 to 58.2 per cent in 2010 is a step in the right direction. The rise of 21 per cent in entries for physics for the second year in a row is also encouraging. Mathematics and physics are the grounding blocks for some careers in the video games industry.
“However, the fact that over 40 per cent of students taking GCSE mathematics are not securing a good pass in the subject underlines the scale of the challenge facing parents, schools and government to improve standards.
“Today’s GCSE results are generally positive but the Government must continue to focus on driving up standards in key subjects such as mathematics and physics. GCSEs are the springboard for progression to A level and degree subjects.”
