UK Charts: Need for Speed makes it five weeks at the top

Electronic Arts' Need for Speed Underground maintained its number one position in the UK software sales charts last week, while the rest of the chart was largely stagnant with no major new releases since Christmas.

Electronic Arts' Need for Speed Underground maintained its number one position in the UK software sales charts last week, while the rest of the chart was largely stagnant with no major new releases since Christmas.

FIFA 2004 returned to the number two spot, up two places from number four, while Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto Double Pack slips four places to number six - its challenge for the top spot apparently spent.

Sony will be pleased to see Eye Toy Play back in the top ten, with the webcam-driven game up four places to number nine, and heavy retailer promotion sees Eye Toy Groove charting in the top 40 for the first time since it launched over two months ago, with an entry at number 18.

Elsewhere it's not a very exciting week, with little movement in the top 40 as the market continues to be driven purely by post-Christmas inertia and retail discounting ahead of the arrival of the first real releases of the year this week.

The highest ranked GameCube title is Mario Kart: Double Dash, which is at number 36 this week, but it's outsold by Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing 2 on Xbox, which is at number 32, and also by the Xbox incarnation of the Grand Theft Auto Double Pack.

Next week's chart should hopefully be somewhat more interesting, with EA launching both Looney Tunes Back In Action and NFL Street this Friday, while the console versions of Mafia arrive from Take 2 and Sony launches the first decent RPG of the year, Arc: Twilight of the Spirits.
