Twitch partners with Sony for PlayStation 4
"The opportunity to get Twitch broadcasting into the hands of almost every gamer in the country"
Today at the Gamescom Sony press conference video gaming service Twitch announced it would be working with the console manufacturer to make its video broadcasting service available on PS4.
"We're going to have the opportunity to get Twitch broadcasting into the hands of almost every gamer in the country, and potentially the world, soon," Matthew DiPietro, vice president of marketing told GamesIndustry International yesterday.
"We have somewhere around 600,000 unique broadcasters a month, from console and from PC"
"I think that the demand from gamers generally to do this is going to prove itself in an even more impressive way than it has already."
He added that CEO Emmett Shear wanted to see the day when gaming is the same as broadcasting a game, when gamers automatically play and broadcast, sharing their activity the same way they would "like" something on Facebook.
The company had already announced the partnership with Microsoft and the Xbox One back in June, and there has been an Xbox 360 app since May. DiPietro calls the console integration "probably the biggest development we've had to date."
"Broadcasting gameplay until now, or until the Xbox One comes out, has actually been pretty hard. it's not an easy thing to do, to connect your PC to broadcast gameplay. It takes software, applications, you have to know what you're doing. From a console it's even harder," he says.
"Even so we have somewhere around 600,000 unique broadcasters a month, from console, from PC and that's with all those tech hurdles that they have to go through, so there's clearly demand."
As well as so many broadcasters, the latest figures show that the service has 38 million viewers per month.
GamesIndustry International will have more from the exclusive interview with DiPietro later this week.
