Trip Hawkins joins mobile esports platform Skillz

EA founder will be strategic advisor to the San Francisco startup

Skillz, a mobile focused eSports company, has followed an influx of new funding with the appointment of Trip Hawkins as strategic advisor.

Based in San Francisco, Skillz raised $6 million to fund expansion plans in September. The company claims that its technology, which can be integrated into any mobile game, already supports 100,000 real-money tournaments every day.

Trip Hawkins is, of course, the founder or Electronic Arts and Digital Chocolate, and one of the pioneers of the games industry. He is also involved with the educational startup If You Can, which raised $6.5 million in February.

"Skillz enables confident gamers to prove themselves in a more intense arena, paving the way towards gamer professionals that play for spectators," Hawkins said in a statement.

"To have one of the most respected and revered names in gaming on our team is really a testament to just how big mobile eSports will become," added Skillz CEO Andrew Paradise. "Our intention is to enable competitive tournament play into every mobile game, no matter the genre."
