Tiga Takeout: October 2006

The first ever London

Another landmark in the progress of the UK games industry to promote itself internationally passed last week with the first London Games Festival. Too soon to digest its overall impact but there were some notable successes, and the festival will be back next year. We do know that the Tiga Content Outsourcing and Middleware Market could have sold more stands if we had the space and it definitely âdid the businessâ for its exhibitors, that the careers fair also boasted brisk business and that the Bafta Video games awards with black tie garb looked more akin to its TV and Film cousins drawing some 650 attendees including Bafta members from other disciplines.

All feedback on the Tiga and other events featured for the London Games Festival would be appreciated.

On the subject of Baftas...

special congratulations Relentless for scooping yet another gong with âBuzzâ, and being the first Tiga member to win one of the new Baftas.

Welcome aboard

Continuing with Brighton matters Tiga is delighted to welcome Geoff Heath of Climax and NC Soft onto its board albeit until the end of the year when he and other board members will be elected for 2007.

The process will be completed at the AGM on December 13th, which is open to all members. The Xmas dinner will also take place on this date at Bertorelliâs Restaurant in Soho, the price is £72 per person and members can reserve their place by emailing Stephanie.rickwood@tiga.org.

We will be giving out the 3rd annual Tiga Awards at the Xmas dinner, developer members have been emailed their nominations form, please make sure you return them by fax on 0845 094 1 095 by Friday 1st December.

Employment Law Roundtable

Tiga will also hold an Employment Law Roundtable provisionally timed for November 30th for members, where companies will discuss the latest employment laws and regulations with experts in the field.

New middleware section

On October 3rd a new section of Tiga was launched for middleware providers — Tiga believes that middleware solutions will become more important as the production process for games gets broken down into smaller chunks that can be outsourced to specialists. And whilst middleware can help efficiencies it also has the potential to lower the barriers to new entrants coming into the industry. High on the groups agenda will be the âinteroperabilityâ of different solutions and the formation of a network of UK and European middleware suppliers with interested parties from other related industries.
