THQ has confirmed that it plans to release a version of Tetris for the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe later this year, having settled its long-running legal dispute with The Tetris Company.

A spokesperson from the publisher confirmed the 2006 release date to US website IGN.com, although no specific launch window was provided.

The latest financial report from THQ revealed that a settlement of the lawsuit, which alleged breach of contract and prevented the publisher from releasing a version of the game on Nintendo DS, has resulted in THQ securing the rights to publish a next-gen version of the game in territories outside of Japan.

Already a popular launch title for Microsoft's console in Japan, it is unknown at this stage whether or not the classic arcade puzzler will be released as a premium retail unit (perhaps at the attractive GBP 24.99 price point adopted by Rockstar for its Table Tennis title), or made available as part of the Xbox Live Arcade service alongside the likes of Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Lumines Live.
