The head of the new publishing unit explains why today's business needs additional options
Well, I can't really talk about forecasts of future business, but I can give an example. When you think about the future distribution of retail product, the numbers are pretty simple. If you take 1 million units - and that could be one, two or five titles - and your nett wholesale is $25-30 depending on what price points you have, the formats and so on.
1 million units isn't a lot for a global publishing operation in the big picture - but that's $25-30 million in revenue, so it adds up really quick. I'm really excited about the potential.
That's a really good question. When I first looked at this opportunity I was really focused on retail - but the more I looked into it, THQ has a tremendous digital business, one of the largest suppliers of product to Steam, for example.
So I think there are a lot of opportunities for companies to work with us on digital distribution, because we have the ability to promote the products - not just get it up there. Working with us in digital could actually be an uplift for them. Some people will feel they can do it themselves, but the reality is that we can bring enough to the table that it becomes a win-win situation.
Then online we have a completely fleshed out online group that can carry product, whether it's a full MMOG, an online game supported by virtual currency, a Facebook game - the whole range of online is available as well.
But with that said, I am going to primarily focus on retail.
I guess the one thing that's obvious is that we're new to this as an official organisation, so I think there's an opportunity for a major developer to be the big fish in a small pond, so to speak.
Yeah, in distribution it's nice - there are certain business where the more you have, the better. In others you really want to know you have the mind share of the publishing group, and in this case I think that will be attractive to some people.
Exactly.
