Super Mario Run nearing 150m downloads

Nintendo's mobile platformer has been installed on nearly 72m devices since January

The poster child for Nintendo's move into mobile is still gaining momentum, according to comments from the platform holder's most recent earnings call.

GameSpot reports that president Tatsumi Kimishima says Super Mario Run "will soon reach 150m downloads" - a marked improvement on the 78m downloads reported back in January.

However, this previous figure came at a time when the game was only available to iOS users. It has since been released on Android, which no doubt accounts for much of the 72m downloads achieved in the last four months.

Kimishima also noted that bringing Mario to mobile devices has introduced the plumber to international audiences that have previously not encountered his video game antics. Super Mario Run's downloads are, in fact, spread across 165 different nations.

"We were able to provide an opportunity for many consumers in countries and regions where we had previously done business to experience this new kind of Mario game that can be played with one hand," he said.

The Nintendo president did not specify how many of these new customers have opted for the $10 payment option to unlock the full game. Instead, he said the number of people making use of Nintendo's free-to-start model is "increasing gradually".

Kimishima has previously said revenues from the iOS edition "did not meet our expectations". Back in January, only 5% of players had opted to pay for the full game.
