Suda 51: comments were misinterpreted

Goichi Suda, CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture Inc and the man behind killer7 and No More Heroes, has hit back at quotes attributed to him in a recent CVG interview regarding the plight of Nintendo third party titles.

He was originally quoted as saying that, when asked about the sales of the game in Japan: "Whilst the sales weren't as high as I hoped, other titles for Wii aren't selling so well either.

"Only Nintendo titles are doing well. This isn't just because of the current situation in Japan, as this is happening outside Japan."

The implication there is that third party titles for the Wii aren't selling well anywhere, which is something that others have expressed concern over previously, and cited as a possible reason for the failure of the Wii in the long term.

However, Suda - better known as Suda 51 - has attempted to clarify those comments on his company's web site, claiming that they were misinterpreted.

"I am concerned to learn my comments in one interview regarding the success of Nintendo 3rd party titles have been misinterpreted.

"My point was that No More Heroes, unlike a lot of Nintendo Wii titles currently available, is the kind of product which will attract a different kind of consumer to the hardware - i.e. gamers who are looking for a different genre to the products which have been successful on this platform thus far."

From that it's clear that Suda 51 doesn't want to be drawn on sales results for games other than his own, or to be associated with comments that might be seen as negative for the Nintendo console.
