Substance Redux
Tiny texture tech taken on by major MMO devs.
CLERMONT-FERRAND, France — Jan. 12, 2011 — Adding to their growing list of prominent massively multiplayer online (MMO) game developers, Allegorithmic today announced that its automatic texture compression tool, Substance Redux, has been adopted by Runewaker Entertainment, as well as NetDragon Websoft Inc. and Wargaming.net, the maker of the popular World of Tanks game. All three studios will utilize the high-end tool to instantly reduce the texture size of their games.
Created to work within online games at any stage of development, Substance Redux allows textures of small- to large-scale MMOs to be quickly reduced by close to 50 percent, making this tool a state-of-the-art compression solution for online games that need to broaden their audience.
Specializing in the creation of massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG), Taiwan-based Runewaker Entertainment is best known for its popular game, Runes of Magic. The company recently implemented Substance Redux after the completion of the game and was able to create Runes of Magic slim client, officially released last October in Europe.
”We were fortunate to be one of the very first to work with Substance Redux,” says Tony Tang, vice president of business development at Runewaker. “Redux has reduced our client size dramatically without losing quality and allowed more players to enjoy Runes of Magic with less downloading time.”
Two other top MMO game developers, NetDragon Websoft Inc. and Wargaming.net, also recently licensed Substance Redux for multiple high-end projects. Using Substance Redux will allow these companies to automatically reduce the size of each game’s texture package by close to 50 percent. This will help to increase profits as more users are now able to quickly download and play the game without compromising graphic quality as well as cutting operations costs.
“Reducing the download size of MMO games is an excellent way to cut the bandwidth cost and lower the entrance barriers in homes and cyber cafes around the world,” said Sebastien Deguy, founder and CEO of Allegorithmic. “We are thrilled that Runewaker, Netdragon and Wargaming.net have been able to produce such excellent results with Substance Redux and look forward to its continued success with users throughout the world.”
