StarCraft II sells 1 million on day one

Biggest selling PC game of 2010 after only 24 hours, claims Blizzard

StarCraft II has become the biggest selling PC game of 2010, and the fastest selling strategy game of all time, after selling more than 1.5 million copies in its first 48 hours on sale, 1 million of those sales coming in the first day.

Over 8000 retail outlets participated in the game's midnight launch in countries across the world, more than 3000 of them owned by GameStop.

"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on five different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime.

Wings of Liberty is GameStop's fastest selling PC game since Blizzard released the World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King in 2008. For comparison, FIFA 10, the fastest selling sports game of all time, sold 1.7 million units during its first week at retail across all platforms. The original StarCraft is estimated to have sold over 11 million copies since launch.
