Namco's eagerly anticipated beat 'em up, Soul Calibur II, has received a nomination for the SIGGRAPH computer graphics festival in San Diego for its impressive 3D introduction sequence.

It's not uncommon for videogames to be nominated for SIGGRAPH, but if Soul Calibur II does manage to win the Best of Show award, it would be the first time that a videogame has won the award since Onimusha walked away with it in 2000.

Soul Calibur II has an entirely pre-rendered intro, unlike its predecessor which used real-time footage.

"Being nominated by SIGGRAPH, the world's largest computer-graphics festival, makes all of us on the project very happy because it shows that our product has been recognized around the world," enthused Soul Calibur II producer Hiroaki Yotoriyama. "I hope to continue working on the production of top-brand content to distribute to the world."

You can expect to see Soul Calibur II on European shelves on September 26 on all three console formats, according to the latest release information from EA and Nintendo.
