Sony responds to Microsoft's cross-platform play announcement

Sony is "happy to have the conversation" about cross-platform play on PlayStation 4.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it would allow developers to make Xbox One and Windows 10 games that could connect to other console and PC networks. Today, Sony has responded, noting that the company is open to the conversation of allowing cross-platform play on PlayStation Network.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002," Sony told Gamespot in a statement. "We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

The first Xbox One game with cross-platform play is Rocket League, which is planned for release on the system in late spring. The PlayStation 4 version of Rocket League already has the ability to connect with Rocket League players on Steam.

"Cross-network play has been the number-one most requested feature our community has asked for since Rocket League was first announced on Xbox One, and now that we are able to pursue complete online unity on all platforms, today's announcement is a dream come true," said developer Psyonix on the official Rocket League site.
