Sony doubles Q1 PlayStation 3 sales to 1.56 million

Software sales for PS3 and PSP business also on the rise

Sony has revealed that worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 reached 1.56 million units during the first quarter, April – June 2008.

The figure is more than double the 700,000 units sold for the same period last year.

Sales of the PSP handheld were also up on last year to 3.72 million, compared to 2.13 million units in 2007.

Worldwide software sales for the PS3 were up by 18.1 million, with 22.8 million games sold during the first quarter.

PSP titles totalled 11.8 million, an increase of 2 million for the same period.

PlayStation 2 hardware sales dropped for the three month period to 1.51 million units, and software sales for the ageing console were 19.3 million units.

The company still expects to sell 10 million PS3 units during this financial year, and 15 million PSPs.
