Skype for PSP goes live in Europe

Sony has released the latest firmware upgrade for the PSP, allowing users to make and receive phone calls through Skype software.

Users of the PSP Slim & Lite can take advantage of the communications package which allows free calls over the internet to other Skype users and the ability to make paid for calls to landlines and mobiles.

The firmware also adds the Go! Messenger icon to the PSP in preparation for the launch of the service in February. Go! Messenger adds video calls, instant messaging, voice chat and voice messaging to the handheld and works with both PSP hardware variations.

Sony only announced the addition of Skype services to the PSP earlier this month at CES in Las Vegas.

Plans to launch the service in Japan were delayed recently due to issues with compatible hardware.
