SCEA to focus on current PlayStation 3 models

Following Sony Japan's announcement that it would be discontinuing the 20GB and 60GB model PlayStation 3, SCEA indicated that it had no plans to change its current focus.

"This morning SCEI made an announcement in reference to Japan no longer shipping the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 configurations. We have already stopped shipping these in the US and have been focused on the 80GB and 40GB configurations which are currently at retail," the company said in a statement.

"As we've said, we will also continue to read and evaluate market trends and communicate with consumers to determine appropriate configurations for each territory."

Sony Japan will now concentrate on the 40GB model which was introduced last November.

In the US, the 20GB model was in short supply before officially being discontinued, and Sony stopped manufacturing the 60GB model with the introduction of a new 80GB model last July.

SCEA released a fourth configuration in the US - a 40GB model - in October. Unlike the other PS3 consoles, the 40GB lacks backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 software.
