Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition tops Japanese chart

PS3 sees sales surge, knocks Wii to third in hardware chart

Capcom's Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition has topped the latest Japanese software chart, selling in excess of 140,000 copies in its debut week.

Along with Heavy Rain, which also entered the top ten this week at number six, the game boosted PS3 hardware sales, taking the console from fourth to second place in the hardware chart.

The number of PS3 units shifted in the week rose considerably, from 24,811 last week to 32,130 - just a few hundred behind the hardware chart's number one console, the PSP.

Last week's number one in the software chart, God Eater, dropped to two, while there was one other new entry to the top ten - Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D World Championship 2010, which charted at number eight.

Wii Sports Resort also re-entered the top ten, moving from 13 to ten.
