Qualcomm acquires gesture control assets

Telecomms company to incorporate GestureTek assets in Snapdragon processors

The wireless telecoms company Qualcomm has acquired gesture recognition assets to bolster its smartphone product portfolio.

The deal was struck with Gesturetek, a pioneer in the field of gestural control with more than 25 years of experience.

In the past, GestureTek has licensed patents to Microsoft for Kinect and Sony for the EyeToy, but this deal will give Qualcomm full ownership of intellectual property assets and engineering resources relating to gestural control.

"Applications processors are enabling a range of new ways for consumers to interface with their home entertainment and mobile devices," said Qualcomm's executive vice president and group president, Steve Mollenkopf.

"Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm's smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences."

The technology will be integrated into Qualcomm's current and next generation Snadragon processors, which are widely used in smartphone and tablet devices.

GestureTek will retain its assets in relation to its gesture-controlled public display and digital signage business.
