The PlayStation 3 has finally managed to break into the top ten of the Japanese charts, scoring a number one hit with Sega's Virtua Fighter 5.

Sony's PS3 may have been released last November, but the next-gen console had so far failed to break into a top ten dominated by titles for Nintendo's Wii and DS consoles.

However, Sega's popular fighting title, a day-one release game for Europe, has stormed the charts selling just over 48,000 copies.

It's closest rival is Nintendo's Wii Sports, selling close to 46,000 units.

The rest of the top five is made up of Nintendo titles Wii Play, More Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros.

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, published by Capcom in the territory, continues to perform well, at number six.

Wario: Master of Disguise is at number seven, Harvest Moon: The Island I Grew Up On is at eight and Luminous Arc is at number nine - all DS titles.

Rounding out the top ten is the second PS2 title - J-League Pro Soccer 5, also published by Sega.
