Over 200 years ago Edmond Hoyle was the first person to fully document how card games should be played - essentially creating the first globally recognised 'Authorised Card Game Rules'. Edmond was an English writer, born in 1672, living most of his adult life in London where he was a barrister. During his time there he began tutoring the 'upper classes' in the game of Whist and subsequently published a pamphlet on the subject. Due to the huge success of this pamphlet he officially copywrited and printed it in 1742. Following this, Hoyle produced further books on gaming and the rules involved - each was hugely successful. His writing on the Laws of Gaming have given rise to the saying "according to Hoyle" which is still recognised as a phrase in dictionaries and encyclopaedias today. Edmond Hoyles legend lives on - he is still renowned worldwide in Gaming circles and his original rules, now over 200 years old, are still respected and used today.
His huge contributions to the world of gaming was recognised in 1979 when he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
