Poundland enters games retail with £5 console titles
350 UK stores now stocking video games with 50 more to be added in March, retailer tells GamesIndustry.biz
The UK games retail space has a new contender in the form of value shop Poundland.
GamesIndustry.biz can reveal that the nationwide chain is now stocking a wide range of console titles at low prices and even has plans to expand into other games-related product lines.
Poundland is a High Street retailer than stocks an assortment of products from groceries and cosmetics to toys and homeware, but this is the first time it has sold video games.
The initial line-up is comprised of PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles, all sourced from the firm's supplier Music Magpie. The range will be a mix of "old titles and newer refurbished titles", with games such as Fallout: New Vegas and the original Destiny already spotted on shelves.
At present, 350 Poundland stores around the UK now stock these games, with a further 50 stores due to introduce the range in March. And, in keeping with the core Poundland ethos, no title will be sold for more than £5.
"This is an exciting new range we've launched," senior buyer Richard Brewin told GamesIndustry.biz. "It will include a mix of both new and professionally refurbished lines."
He continued: "There is a wide choice [of titles] available for customers, which will continually churn. We have always been clear that in addition to our £1 price point we would offer products at £2 and £5, allowing us to move into new categories and this is a great example of that - offering customers even more amazing value."
Poundland hopes to also introduce Wii U titles to the range in future, and is planning to expand into gaming accessories with controllers, power packs and similar items.
