PlayTime

New tech from OpenFeint promises easy creation of multiplayer games with voice chat across iOS and Android.

Burlingame, CA – September 1, 2010 – OpenFeint, the leading mobile social gaming network with 37 million players and 2,800 connected games, today announced the upcoming release of PlayTime, a set of cutting edge multiplayer technologies for Independent Mobile Developers to enhance both Casual and Hardcore games. Games using PlayTime can support real-time multiplayer with voice chat across iOS and Android.

“The most successful games have one thing in common: they bring people together. Whether a simple board game or a stunning 3D console game, games are always better when shared with family or friends,” said Jason Citron, CEO of Aurora Feint. “Traditionally, multiplayer technology has been accessible only to top tier developers. It’s just too complicated and time consuming. So we invented PlayTime, which literally takes one day to integrate into a casual game.”

PlayTime for Casual Games gives developers the tools to transform a single player game with highscores into a multiplayer game based on highscore competition. Developers will also have the flexibility to create cooperative experiences using OpenFeint’s new PlayTime achievements. A developer simply needs to have highscores in their game to take advantage of the PlayTime APIs. The PlayTime for Casual Games SDK will include drop in widgets for displaying progress, an embedded VoIP client for group voice chat, a lobby, a matchmaking system for starting sessions, and a synchronized event system for passing data between games.

With PlayTime for Core Games, developers will be able to build complex real time multiplayer games just like those found on Xbox Live. PlayTime for Core Games is built in partnership with Exit Games and provides a robust architecture for 16 player server authoritative multiplayer games, with group voice chat for team coordination, as well as a skill based lobby and matchmaking system.

“Exit Games is proud to work closely with OpenFeint to bring the normally complex world of multiplayer games to independent mobile developers,” said Christof Wegmenn, CEO and Founder of Exit Games.” We believe PlayTime will usher in the next wave of social experiences across the mobile ecosystem.”

PlayTime will launch later this year as part of OpenFeint 3.0. Developers interested in implementing PlayTime features in their OpenFeint enabled games can learn more and sign up to participate in a private beta program at OpenFeint.com/Developers .
