PlayStation consoles surpass 500 million sold worldwide
And Sony is celebrating with a fancy PS4
More than 500 million PlayStation consoles have been sold since the machine debuted in Japan in 1994.
Sony says that the exact figure is 525.3 million, which includes sales of PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and PS Vita. PS4 currently accounts for 81.2 million of that figure.
The firm is marking the sales milestone with a series of special edition machines, including a translucent blue PS4 - limited to 50,000 consoles. There will also be a limited edition controller and wireless headset, too.
"I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the continued support from our fans and business partners, who have all contributed to PlayStation's rich history," commented Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John Kodera.
"Without our passionate community, we would not have been able to surpass this remarkable milestone of 500 million units. PlayStation 4 Pro 500 Million Limited Edition has been created to represent our appreciation to our loyal fans. We will continue to make PlayStation the best place to play for all, as does our continued commitment to expanding our library of great games and variety of network services."
