Online retailer Play.com has reacted to forthcoming PS2 pricecuts on continental Europe (which will not apply to the UK) by cutting the price of the console to £129.99, £40 cheaper than the official RRP.

The price of the PS2 in Europe has been cut to â'¬199 from â'¬249, bringing the console in line with the Xbox and GameCube price points - but this change has not taken effect in the UK, where the price remains at £169.99.

"Sony has taken significant steps in making price reductions across continental Europe and other major markets," commented Play.com's head of marketing, Jenny Taylor, "and we are keen to ensure that the British consumer doesn't lose out."

The company also offers Microsoft's Xbox at £10 under its £129.99 RRP, and Nintendo's GameCube at £79.99 - a £50 discount on its RRP, which is also £129.99.

Play.com's price cut may put pressure on other UK retailers to offer discounts on the hardware; competing online retailer Amazon.com already offers the system for £20 off RRP at £149.99. After the European price cut, the PlayStation RRP in the UK will be the highest in the world, that we are aware of.
