Overwatch steals UK #1 from Uncharted 4
Blizzard's shooter secures another win, Total War: Warhammer sneaks into the retail chart
Overwatch entered the UK retail chart at number one last week, yet another signal that Blizzard's multiplayer shooter is a mega-hit in the making.
The open beta for Overwatch attracted 9.7 million players, and the critics have offered near unanimous praise. Last week, GameStop CEO Tony Bartel told the company's investors that Overwatch had exceeded expectations in terms of sales, "and I think Activision would say that they saw an increase as well."
The game's performance at UK retail is, of course, just a narrow part of the overall picture, in terms of both Blizzard's global appeal and what is likely to be a substantial proportion of digital sales.
The other significant new release of last week, Total War: Warhammer, entered the chart in ninth place. However, that's another example of a game where digital sales are vital to judging its overall success. Sega has already confirmed that Creative Assembly's latest has broken the franchise sales record, surpassing 500,000 units within a week of its release.
