Nintedo platforms regained their market dominance over the other videogame formats in Japan last week with the news that while the Wii still sits at the top of the hardware sales chart, the DS and replaces the PlayStation Portable at number two.

The Wii sold just over 78,500 units for the week ending February 17, according to data compiled by Media Create, giving it sales of just over 700,000 for 2008 so far.

That compares to the Nintendo DS, which sold 62,362 units, and the PSP which shifted 59,654.

Meanwhile the PlayStation 3, while suffering a dip on the previous week - likely due to an absence of any key software releases for that platform since Devil May Cry 4 - sold just over 17,500, and is still on course to break the 2 million lifetime mark for Japan by the end of March.

The PlayStation 2 sold just over 11,000 units, while the Xbox 360 finished a distant last, shifting just 2200 boxes.

The chart is as follows:

1. Nintendo Wii: 78,583
2. Nintendo DS: 62,362
3. PlayStation Portable: 59,654
4. PlayStation 3: 17,637
5. PlayStation 2: 11,266
6. Xbox 360: 2198
