A patent has been filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office by Nintendo which seems to indicate it is working on motion sensing technology for use in a handheld console.
Filed on March 30, the patent describes "A game system includes a housing to be held by a player," and goes on to define motion through three axes: "â¦having change-state detecting means to detect at least one of an amount and a direction of a change applied to the housing."
What that seems to imply is functionality for a console not too dissimilar to that found in Nintendo's Wii remote.
However, Nintendo refuses to be drawn on the subject, and a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz, "We file hundreds and thousands of patents every year - this is simply just one of them."
