Nintendo hails 1.5m console sales over US Holiday week
DS handheld shifts 900,000 units as Wii sells 600,000 in busy week for hardware company
Nintendo has announced that it sold 1.5 million consoles last week in one of the busiest shopping weeks in the US market.
The Thanksgiving Holiday week, encompassing Black Friday, saw strong sales of Nintendo DS handhelds, with 900,000 units being snapped up, while the Wii console sold 600,000 units.
The sales coincided with the launch of new hardware colours, including red Mario-themed Wii and DSi bundles celebrating the character's 25th anniversary, while orange and green DSI handhelds also hit the shelves.
"US shoppers bought about 9000 Nintendo hardware systems non-stop for every hour of every day during the week of Black Friday," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "For the past several years, consumers have decided that Nintendo defined both top value and all-inclusive entertainment, and that sentiment continues again at the start of this shopping season."
Sales numbers for rivals Sony and Microsoft have yet to be released, although they will form part of November's NPD sales results, due in around ten days.
