New 3DS models dominate Japanese hardware chart
The fixation on Nintendo's hardware reaches new heights
Nintendo's New 3DS and New 3DS XL sold a combined total of more than 240,000 units in their first week on sale in Japan.
Along with the standard versions of the hardware - which sold a further 27,000 units - it meant that the 3DS occupied four of the top six places in the hardware chart. By contrast, the eight non-3DS gaming platforms on the chart sold a combined total of just over 33,000.
That was reflected in the software chart, where Capcom's Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate romped to the top spot with 1.4 million units sold. The nearest competitors were both 3DS games: Super Smash Bros. and Yokai Watch 2.
The new generation of consoles, so dominant in Europe and North America, scarcely troubled the software chart at all. FIFA 15 on PlayStation 4 sold a little over 16,000 units, just scraping into the top five. Driveclub, meanwhile, charted at number seven with 8,600 units.
