Namco Bandai halves losses in first quarter

Sales up in home videogame division; Tekken 6 sells over a million units

Namco Bandai has almost halved its losses in the first quarter of its financial year, from ¥2.846 billion ($32.9m / £20.7m) to ¥1.622 billion ($18.7m / £11.8m).

Net sales were up 8.2 per cent to ¥81.9 billion ($949.9m / £598m) for the three months ended June 30, compared to ¥75.7 billion ($878m / £552.8m) for the same period last year.

Net sales in the Content division, which includes the home videogame and arcade machine businesses, also saw a rise from ¥20.2 billion ($234.3m / £147.5m) to ¥32.9 billion, with an improved operating loss of ¥619 million ($7.1m / £4.5m), compared to ¥4.1 billion last year.

Worldwide, Namco Bandai sold 3.1 million games in the first quarter, compared to 3.4 million last year, despite releasing more SKUs during the period.

Tekken 6 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sold 1.07 million units, Taiko Drum Master for the DS sold 170,000 units and Ben 10 Alien Force 110,000 units during the three months.
